North American electrical safety certification for different types of chargers. Have you chosen the right standard?

The harmonized standards ANSI UL 60335-2-29 and CSA C22.2 No 60335-2-29 will bring more convenient and efficient choices to charger manufacturers.

The charger system is an essential accessory for modern electrical products. According to North American electrical safety regulations, chargers or charging systems entering the U.S./Canadian market must obtain a safety certification certificate issued by an officially recognized certification body in the U.S. and Canada such as TÜV Rheinland. Chargers for different usage scenarios have different safety standards. How to choose different standards to conduct safety testing on chargers based on the purpose and usage scenarios of the product? The following keywords can help you make a quick judgment!

Keywords: Household appliances, lamps

For chargers that power household appliances and lamps, you can directly choose the latest North American standards: ANSI UL 60335-2-29 and CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-29, without considering Class 2 limits.

Moreover, ANSI UL 60335-2-29 and CSA C22.2 No.60335-2-29 are European and American harmonized standards. Merchants can complete the EU IEC/EN 60335-2-29 standard certification while doing North American certification. This certification scheme is more helpful to simplify the certification process and reduce certification costs, and has been chosen by more and more manufacturers.

If you still want to choose traditional standards for certification, you need to determine the standard corresponding to the charger product based on the Class 2 limit:

Charger output within Class 2 limits: UL 1310 and CSA C22.2 No.223. Charger output not within Class 2 limits: UL 1012 and CSA C22.2 No.107.2.

Class 2 definition: Under normal operating conditions or single fault conditions, the charger output electrical parameters meet the following limits:

Keywords: Office IT equipment, audio and video products

For office IT equipment such as computers and monitor chargers, as well as audio and video products such as TVs and audio chargers, ANSI UL 62368-1 and CSA C22.2 No.62368-1 standards should be used.

As European and American harmonized standards, ANSI UL 62368-1 and CSA C22.2 No.62368-1 can also complete certification at the same time as IEC/EN 62368-1, reducing certification costs for manufacturers.

Keywords: industrial use

Charger systems adapted to industrial equipment and appliances, such as industrial forklift chargers, should choose UL 1564 and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 107.2 standards for certification.

Keywords: Lead-acid engines, starting, lighting and ignition batteries

If the charger is used for home or commercial use to charge lead-acid engine starters and other starting, lighting, and ignition (SLI) type batteries, ANSI UL 60335-2-29 and CSA C22.2 No. 60335-2-29 may also be used.,one-stop completion of European and American multi-market certifications.

If traditional standards are considered, UL 1236 and CSA C22.2 No.107.2 standards should be used.

Of course, in addition to the above-mentioned electrical safety certification, charger products also need to pay attention to the following mandatory certifications when entering the North American market:

Electromagnetic compatibility test: US FCC and Canadian ICES certification; if the product has wireless power supply function, it must also meet FCC ID certification.

Energy efficiency certification: For the U.S. market, the charger system must pass U.S. DOE, California CEC and other energy efficiency tests and registrations in accordance with CFR regulations; the Canadian market must complete NRCan energy efficiency certification in accordance with CAN/CSA-C381.2.
